July 28, 2011: Grant Morrison Says We Should Emulate Superman

Grant Morrison, the writer relaunching “Action Comics” as part of the DC Universe reboot in September, spoke with The Dylan Ratigan Show on MSNBC about his book “Supergods” and how we, as people, should be trying to emulate superheroes like Superman in our every day lives.

“A character like Superman is a character who we created to solve any problem. Superman beats everything, and he does it without killing, he does it by using his mind, he does it by using the correct use of force … so my suggestion is that maybe if we start thinking a little bit more like these guys … maybe we can learn something … about positive values.”

July 28, 2011: Virtual Reality Kinect Superman

Two departments at the University of Amsterdam created an interactive world with a Superman avatar using the Unity3D game engine for the Xbox 360 Kinect. Using the existing drivers they mapped the user’s movements onto the ones of Superman. The body movements are tracked by the Kinect, the head movements by iWear’s gyroscope.

The goal was to create an immersive virtual environment that tracks the movements of the user, that recognizes specific gestures and reacts to these in a natural feeling way. The user gets feedback through a stereo-vision head-mounted screen and stereo audio. We try to achieve this goal by implementing a 3D game that lets the user take control of ISLA-man, a super hero who looks not completely unlike Superman in appearance and behavior. The game setting gives the user a goal to achieve while having the experience. This might commit the user even more to the virtual environment.

NBCChicago.com reports that the “Man of Steel” production crew will be filming building exteriors in downtown Chicago between August 7th and 17th, weather permitting.
According to the article, even though some later filming will take place in Vancouver, Warner Bros. is insisting Chicago will be featured prominently in director Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise.
